Expect light drizzles for at least a week

MUMBAI: The monsoon may be officially over but the city can expect light showers till the end of next week. The met department has said the monsoon has not withdrawn from the west coast; it marks September 30 as the official season's end.
In the normal scenario, monsoon should have withdrawn from the city on September 20. If the withdrawal pattern of the monsoon in the past few years is any indicator, though, then Mumbaikars can expect a few spells for at least a week.
Last year, for instance, monsoon had withdrawn on October 12. In 2011 and 2010, it was declared withdrawn from the city on October 24 and October 23, respectively.
The meteorological department said there are some criteria to mark the monsoon's withdrawal. "For any area, the main criterion is it should remain dry for three to four days," said an IMD officer.
The IMD said monsoon normally starts withdrawing from north Gujarat by September 15 and, by October 1, from Goa, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is expected to withdraw from Mumbai within this time span as well. Evidently, this is not the case this year either.
"The official last date of the monsoon is September 30. This is for statistical purposes. The monsoon has not yet withdrawn completely from Rajasthan and it might take some time to withdraw from Mumbai," said V K Rajeev, director of weather forecast, IMD.
On Tuesday, Colaba recorded no rainfall while Santa Cruz got 2.1mm.
For now, the city can expect the sultry weather as that on Wednesday to continue.
"There is hardly any rainfall in the city. For the next few days too, there are not likely to be showers in the city," said Rajeev.
